The Sacrament of Marriage is a sacred covenant which God establishes between a man and a woman for a partnership that is lifelong.

purpose of marriage

Marriage is a gift of self to the spouse which is free, total, faithful and fruitful. The purpose of marriage is (1) the procreation and education of children and (2)the mutual perfection and sanctification of the spouses.

A prayer for engaged couples
Lord, thank you for bringing us to each other. We are so blessed to have discovered a best friend, and feel content by the intimacy and trust we have found together. We are so thankful to be your children, adopted into your family, and so grateful to be living in your grace. Guide us as we plan our wedding day and as we prepare for a lifetime together. May our wedding and our marriage be full of your truth, hope and love. Amen.

How do we prepare for the sacrament?

Things to do to begin Marriage Preparation:
  1. Contact the parish priest at least 6 months before you intend to get married.

  2. Talk to the priest about options for a marriage preparation program.

  3. Complete a compatibility survey/assessment to help you and your spouse-to-be prepare for a life together.

  4. Note that a Catholic Wedding MUST take place in a Catholic Church.
Things to do to prepare for the Sacrament as a couple:
  1. Put God first on your guest list.
  2. Focus on your marriage, not the wedding.
  3. Pray about your marriage.
  4. Pray for your fiancé.
  5. Pray together.
  6. Go to Mass regularly.
  7. Plan your wedding together.
  8. Talk about your marriage.
  9. Go to confession.
  10. Receive the Eucharist.
  11. Read and reflection on Ephesians Chapter 5 together.
  12. Check out the websites provided as resources below.
Things to talk about as a couple BEFORE you get married:
  • What are your expectations?
  • What do you expect from each other/from your marriage?
  • What about your money? Have you talked about “the finances"?
  • How do you argue? Do you fight fair? Can you resolve a conflict?
  • Are there any addictions?
  • What is really special about your fiancé?
  • Can you list 10 things that you absolutely love about your fiancé?
  • Is there intimacy? Intimacy is more than sex?
  • Is your faith important?
  • Are you ready for marriage? How can you tell?
  • How about children? Have you talked about children?
  • Is your relationship a priority?
