Support for Families

When children are baptized Catholic, parents make a promise to the Lord to raise and nurture them in the Faith. St. Mary's Family Faith Formation recognizes that this is not an easy task. The primary purpose of Youth Faith Formation is to support parents in living out this promise on a daily basis. This is because the Church teaches parents are the primary educators of the Faith for their children. In light of this teaching, St. Mary’s Family Faith Formation provides opportunities for forming the whole family in the faith with an understanding that this is the most effective way for forming faith in our children.

Formation at Home and Weekly Mass are Essential

Unlike Math, English and other academic subjects, faith is not something that can be effectively taught in the classroom only. Rather, faith is a way of life that is best taught through day-to-day lived experiences and regular faith-based conversations that occur during the course of our daily lives. This is why parents are the best teachers of the faith to children.

What we do in faith formation programming is merely icing on the cake. Praying as a family, modelling and teaching our children to pray and read the Bible every day, attending Mass every Sunday, and regular confession are ESSENTIAL to giving our children the gift of lifelong faith.

Without these daily lived experiences, weekly Mass attendance, and regular confession, weekly faith formation at church can be an exercise in futility, unable to compete with daily messages from media, peers and secular education that contradict the teachings of our Faith.

The video below highlights the things families can do to raise children that will stay Catholic as adults.

Parents of Very Young Children - Bring Your Busy Children for Faith & Fun Sundays at 9:15am

Faith & Fun Family sessions for little  children (babies through Kindergarten) and their parents will be held weekly at 9:15am from September through May.

This time together provides an opportunity for parent fellowship while children encounter the Faith through hands on activities and play.

Weekly Sunday Sessions at 9:15am - Grades 1-8

Sunday morning sessions include:

  • Adult sessions twice per month at the same time as children's sessions
  • Children's sessions twice per month covering church teachings AND living the virtuous life
  • Monthly family session that includes a component on learning how to be full, active participants in the Mass
  • Works of mercy service projects - presented either as part of family session or on designated service Sundays
  • Take home summary for parents to review the content covered by catechists during weekly classes

Grades 1-8 Curriculum

Word of Life is a comprehensive curriculum that catechizes both the head and the heart. When the faith is taught as information, students forget it. When it is taught as the answer to their deepest longings, students treasure it. Word of Life forms students in a Catholic worldview using Scripture and the teachings of the Faith. It includes resources to share with their parents and access to an online portal.

The video below summarizes the Word of Life Curriculum.

New Program - Family of Faith Home Activities for Families

For the 2026/27 school year, St. Mary's will be introducing Sophia Institute's Family of Faith home learning and activities books for families to use during the week to grow their faith life.  We will be using Cycle 5 of the Family of Faith series, which  explores Christian Anthropology and the profound truths of our identity and purpose as children of God.

Family of Faith is created to help children come to know the Catholic Faith through fun games and activities designed specifically for use in the home with their parents as their faith formation guide. The program includes a children's activity book as well as a corresponding Parent’s Guide.

Content includes:

  • Scripture memorization and copy work
  • Instructions for activities and craft projects
  • Prayer memorization and saints’ biographies
  • Games, crafts, drawing and coloring pages
  • Journal pages and prompts for original prayers
