The Parish and Community Outreach Ministry seeks out and assists those in need, materially and spiritually, in the parish and the community. The Ministry serves community members through both ongoing and seasonal ministries.

Ongoing ministries

Good as New thrift store

Good as New Thrift Store is located in downtown Houlton near Market Square. It provides low cost, quality clothing for community members. All profits from the store are put into a fund used to meet basic needs of individuals living in poverty (i.e. fuel assistance, clothing, food etc).

mildred's food pantry - houlton

Housed in the basement of St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church, Mildred's Food Pantry provides food to community members in need of assistance. The Pantry is able to serve 16 families per day and makes appointments on a first come, first served basis. 

The Pantry is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am-11:00am.
To receive food, call 532-9122 Tuesday or Thursday morning anytime between 8:50am and 9:30am to be given an appointment to pick up food that morning. 

Agape Food pantry - island falls

The Agape Food Pantry, a ministry of St. Agnes Church, is open by appointment only. Contact Janette Parady at 463-2449.


Cross cafe

The Cross Cafe provides free coffee, tea, snacks and fellowship to anyone interesting in coming in. The Cafe is located in the basement of St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church. In addition to refreshments, the Cafe has informational resources for individuals who may be experiencing a life crisis.

The Cafe is open Tuesday and Thursday mornings: 9:00am-11:00am
There is no need to call ahead - just stop in!


bereavement ministry

Bereavement Ministers provide a meal after a funeral to families grieving the loss of a loved one. They set up, cook, and clean-up so that families can take time to grieve. 

To request a funeral at St. Mary's, contact the Rectory Office at 532-2871. 


visitation to the homebound

St. Mary's and St. Agnes have trained Eucharistic Ministers who bring Holy Eucharist (Communion) to parishioners who are homebound or hospitalized.

seasonal ministries

Seasonal Ministries occur only once or twice each year. Seasonal Ministries consist of the Giving Tree at Christmas and a Community Thanksgiving Dinner.


Community thanksgiving dinner

A ministry sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, the Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is held on Thanksgiving Day from 12:00-2:00pm. 

The free dinner is for anyone who wants to share in this holiday with St. Mary's.

Donations of food, money, and time are always accepted.

Giving tree

Every year, St. Mary's parishioners purchase gifts for families living in poverty in the Houlton and Hodgdon areas. Gifts are distributed to families the week before Christmas.
